The state of Nevada does not have security guard training requirements to get a general security guard Registration Work Card. However, an applicant must pass a 30 question test. The Registration Work Cards are issued by the Private Investigators Licensing Board. The licensing test covers the information in chapter 648 of the Nevada Revised Statutes and chapter 648 of the Nevada Administrative Code.
However, the Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (NCCB) requires 8-hours of in-person, on-site security training for some employees who work at cannabis establishments within 3 months of being hired.
NV Unarmed Security Guard Work Card
To obtain a work card registration to be an unarmed guard a person must meet the requirements set forth in NRS 648.1493 to include, but not limited to:
- Is at least 18 years of age;
- Is of good moral character and temperate habits;
- Has not been convicted of, or entered a plea of nolo contendere to, a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude or the illegal use or possession of a dangerous weapon;
- Has not made a false statement of material fact on the application; and
- Has not violated any provision of this chapter, a regulation adopted pursuant thereto or an order of the Board.
To complete your NV security guard Work Card application you need
- Copy of Identification (2 types)
- Driver’s license or state/federal issued ID
AND
- Social security card or birth certificate
OR
- A non-expired US Passport will be sufficient for both forms of ID
- Citizen’s proof of citizenship required for non US Citizens
- Fingerprints (not able to be printed until payment has been made to our office)
- 2 x 2 inch Photo (most fingerprint companies will take your photo)

Exam
A PDF copy of the security guard work card exam is available on the PILB website. You submit this exam to the PILB, which scores your exam. You must get 100% on the exam. An security guard exam study guide is also available on the PILB website.
Provisional (Temporary) Security Guard Work Card
A provisional work is emailed to you once you pass the initial background check. The email comes from a “no-reply” address so please check junk folder.
It is taking approximately 5-7 business days to receive the provisional email. If you paid to expedite the process, the email will be sent in 2-3 business days.
Nevada Armed Security Guard Work Card
To become an armed guard in Nevada, you will need to be employed by a licensee that is willing to sponsor you to take the firearm training course. Your employer must add you to their online roster and give you a signed Verification of Employment Armed Security (VEAS) form to take to a Certified Firearm Instructor (CFI) who administers the course.
The firearm course consists of eight hours of training and instruction on carrying, handling and using a firearm safely, including the completion of a written exam with a passing score of 75% or better.
Additionally, there is a minimum of 5 hours of instruction and training at a firing range during which time each person must qualify using a firearm of the same type and caliber as the firearm they will be using while on duty,
You must successfully re-qualify for firearm certification every 6 months during the designated months indicated on your Nevada armed security guard work card.
Cannabis Employee Required Security Training in Nevada
The Nevada Cannabis Compliance Board (NCCB) Regulations were adopted on July 21, 2020 and went into effect on August 5, 202. The NCCB oversees the cannabis industry. In the NCCB Regulation 6’s (Production and Distribution of Cannabis) Section 6.085 Sub section 6 and 7 requires a minimum of 8-hours of on-site, in-person security training for certain cannabis establishments.
NCCB Regulation 6.085 Subsection 6
Each cannabis establishment must employ a security manager or director who must be responsible for:
- Training employees on security measures, emergency response and robbery prevention and response before starting work and on an annual basis; and
- Evaluating the credentials of any third party, such as a security guard company, that provides security to the cannabis establishment before the third party is hired by or enters into a contract with the cannabis establishment.
NCCB Regulation 6.085 Subsection 7
Each cannabis establishment shall ensure that the
- security manager or director of the cannabis establishment,
- at least one employee of the cannabis establishment or
- the employees of any third party who provides security to the cannabis establishment
has completed or will complete within three months of being hired, to be proven by written attestation from the employee and the training officer, the following training:
- Theft prevention or a related subject;
- Emergency response or a related subject;
- Appropriate use of force or a related subject that covers when the use of force is and is not necessary;
- Use and administration of first aid, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
- Protection of a crime scene or a related subject;
- Control of access to protected areas of a cannabis establishment or a related subject;
- Not less than 8 hours of on-site training in providing security services; and
- Not less than 8 hours of classroom training in providing security services.
